With playmaking abilities to go with athleticism considered unmatched in the draft, even by his twin brother Ausar, Thompson could join Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr. as the third early draft picks to be the foundation of the rebuild before the Rockets’ first-round pick could go to Oklahoma City next season and again in 2026 as part of the 2019 trade that sent Chris Paul to the Thunder for Russell Westbrook.
It is exceedingly uncertain what they would do with that pick or even if they will be making the 20th selection, and not just because of the unpredictable draft order after the lottery. There is, however, potential for a player under consideration in the middle of the first round to slide far enough to be in the Rockets range. There are also several later first-round picks that have moved up to consideration for teams picking roughly when the Rockets could be back on the clock.
