The solution to the problems in the field is carried out with general policies so that the real problems are often not revealed. In fact, often the solution to the problem can be overcome by the farmers themselves. However, because of certain regulations, they must follow the policies that are implemented. Finally, local cultural practices in food management are rarely seen.
This holistic bottom-up approach has its own advantages as it avoids the risks of generalization and abstraction. This approach also shows that anthropologists can play a role in understanding and solving the problems faced by local farmers by focusing on existing patterns of interaction. For example, the relationships between farmers, agricultural scientists, the government, foreign aid organizations, and NGOs.
Various challenges faced by small farmers are explored, such as access to markets, climate change, and pressure from international trade systems. Through case studies from countries such as Indonesia, India, and Timor Leste, Reuter and MacRae describe how local farmers adapt to these conditions. Despite significant challenges, there are also opportunities for small farmers to increase production and welfare through innovation and appropriate policy support.
In addition, this book also analyzes Bali holistically, starting from the impact of tourism on agriculture to how events such as the Kuta bombing changed perspectives on sustainable economic development. Moreover, traditional irrigation system in Bali, Subak, is also revealed, and how local innovation can actually help develop more sustainable rice farming.
