TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s Republican governor has asked the state’s high court to weigh in on whether a recently-adopted constitutional amendment restoring voting rights to former felons requires them to first pay fines or fees imposed by a court.Friday amid bitter fighting over voting rights in the presidential battleground state, where Republican-backed legislation imposing financial hurdles on would-be voters has triggered a federal lawsuit.
By law, a sitting governor can ask the court for an advisory opinion on any question about his or her powers and duties. A search of state Supreme Court records shows seven previous requests in the last 30 years. DeSantis has appointed three of the seven justices that now sit on the bench. Legislators said the amendment was vague and passed a bill that imposed additional definitions and restrictions. Republicans who pushed for the requirements complained that supporters had agreed with their interpretation before the measure was approved by voters.
