Florida's legislature is set to consider an amendment Wednesday that would clear the way for Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to run for president in 2024.
The proposed amendment, introduced Tuesday by state GOP Sen. Travis Hutson, seeks to clarify that the state's existing"resign to run" law does not apply to people seeking to run for president or vice president. The move is the latest in a series of steps that appear to show the Florida governor is inching closer to an announcement of his candidacy.
“I am a bit biased because I think Gov. DeSantis has done such a good job, so I just want to make clear that if he is not the Republican nominee [for president], he can be back,” Hutson told the outlet. The governor is popular among the Republicans in both chambers, so the bill is expected to pass the House and Senate. DeSantis is likely to sign the bill in approval as well, as it is geared toward his interest.
He is currently trailing Trump in every major national poll by double digits, RealClearPolitics reported. On average, he is trailing the former president by 27.7 points.
