The state weather bureau, on Friday morning, Jan. 6, warned residents living in low-lying areas and those near the riverbank of Angat River from Norzagaray and Hagonoy to be vigilant against possible flooding due to the rise in river elevation.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has observed a basin average of 78 millimeter rainfall in the past 24 hours. The rainfall was primarily brought by two weather systems: shear line and the northeast monsoon, locally called “amihan.”

These weather systems, based on PAGASA’s forecast rainfall, are expected to continue bringing rains in most parts of the country in the next 24 hours. Following the moderate to at times heavy rainfall brought by these two weather systems, the water level of Angat Dam rose to 216.02m as of 8 a.m. on Friday.

“[It is] continuously rising due to the expected light rains caused by the weather system. The spilling operation as of 8 a.m. with a total discharge of 717 cms. [Meanwhile,] the water level of Ipo Dam as of 8 a.m. is 101.22 with a total discharge of 680.28 cms,” the state weather bureau’s flood situationer read.

PAGASA assured the public that they will continuously monitor the hydrological situation of Angat River. The public, however, was strongly warned to be alert for possible rain-induced hazards such as flooding and landslides.
