Transportation Department investigates fix for Ford Explorer recall

To fix the issue, Ford released a software update that would engage the electronic parking brake when affected Explorers were put in park. By April 2023, Ford reported it had repaired, inspected or taken back just under half of the estimated number of vehicles affected. But two vehicle owners submitted complaints to the NHTSA that their SUVs continued to malfunction following the repair, according to the AP report.
One driver said their Explorer would suddenly stop while traveling at speeds of as much as 40 miles per hour. The other driver said their vehicle would lurch into motion while the driver attempted to disengage the electronic brake. Neither driver was injured, although the first driver reported their vehicle struck a utility pole when it started rolling downhill following a sudden stop.
