Dallas County announced its first West Nile virus death of 2024.

The department said the patient was a woman with underlying health conditions diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease — a severe form of the“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” department director Dr. Philip Huang said in a news release. “This heartbreaking tragedy underscores the critical importance of safeguarding against mosquito bites, which can transmit several diseases including WNV.

West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. Most infected people will show no symptoms, but patients who develop symptoms can experience fevers, headaches, body aches and rashes between three to 14 days after a mosquito bite. Fewer than 1% of people who contract the virus develop severe West Nile neuroinvasive disease, a condition that can lead to death or long-term disability.
