HEADLAND-Josephine Holleman Hicks will celebrate her 105th birthday with family and friends at the Old Mill Restaurant in Dothan this weekend, but she doesn’t expect 105 candles on her cake,

Frank Holleman died of a heart attack in 1929 and his widow and three children—Bill, age 11, Hicks, age 9, and Don, age 7-- returned to the family homestead in Milligan, about four miles from Crestview, Florida, next door to Hick’s grandmother’s house. “My dad had a car, but my mom never learned to drive so when he died, she sold the car,” Hicks said. “So, we walked about a mile to school. One of mom’s sisters who lived next door had a car so she would take us to school when the weather was bad.”Hicks said her two brothers joined the military after high school but with her widowed mother paid about $52 a month as a schoolteacher, how to pay for college for her daughter was a challenge. At the time Florida offered a scholarship for teachers.
Hicks said she paid back every penny. “I got a job teaching right away and took $75 out of my salary each month and mailed it to him at the bank,” she said. “I was lucky.”
