Firefighters were battling a large fire in a vacant restaurant at the end of the Oceanside pier Thursday afternoon. The blaze was reported shortly after 3 p.m. at the building that formerly housed a Ruby's Diner. Images shared on social media showed a large black plume of smoke rising above the end of the pier. Fire department officials said in a press release that the cause of the fire 'has not been confirmed at this time' and that the fire was not under control.
'It was really scary for our team and for our chef,' she said. 'I do know that everybody is safe.' By 4:30 p.m., white smoke replaced the black smoke but it remains so thick the end of the pier was obscured from view. At least one firefighting boat on the ocean blasted water at the end pier, and several firetrucks lined up around the foot. Crews were also dousing the flames with firefighting helicopter.
