The sandwich shop, which opened in a small Jersey Shore town just south of Atlantic City in 1969, caught fire days after reopening under new ownership
, displacing three families and leading to the destruction of an adjacent bubble tea shop.
Deputy Chief Brady Middlesworth of the Ventnor City Fire Department told NJ Advance Media they received a call for fire in the rear of 5217 Ventnor Ave. — Sack O’ Subs’ address — at 5:29 p.m. on Saturday. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames from the rear of the building, and high winds intensified the fire. A second and third alarm were called for, bringing firefighters from Margate, Atlantic City and Pleasantville.
“I’m just sick to my stomach over what has happened,” said Anthony Sacco, who bought Sack O’ Subs location from franchisee Fred Spitalnick earlier in June,The Sack O’ Subs website now lists the location as “closed due to fire.” Sacco was not immediately available for comment Monday.
