Mat-Su fire crews were responding Wednesday to reports of a fire at Goose Creek Correctional Center, the state’s largest prison located near Wasilla. No inmates are housed in the area where the fire started, an official said.
Fire crews responded to a small fire Wednesday morning at Goose Creek Correctional Center, the state’s largest prison located near Wasilla, emergency officials say.
The fire did not occur in a portion of the prison where inmates are housed and prompted no immediate evacuations, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Betsy Holley. The Central Mat-Su and West Lakes fire departments arrived at the prison around 10 a.m. and the fire was under control about an hour later, said Ken Barkley, emergency services director for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Crews were still at the prison cleaning up around noon, he said.
Holley could not provide additional details about where, how or when the fire began. She said more information should be available by early afternoon.
