After years of drought, the San Antonio area's beloved bluebonnets have performed poorly this year with less blooms and seed production.The reaction most gardeners in the area around San Antonio had to the bluebonnet performance this year was disappointment. There were less blooms, and the seed production isn’t impressive.
In my neighborhood, firewheel and coreopsis are making a great show. The firewheel is a flat bloom about silver dollar size that produces its flowers on plants 18 inches tall. The blooms are an intense rusty red that attract butterflies and bees as a nectar source. The firewheels look especially good interspersed in the yellow coreopsis flowers. The timing and quantity of the rain did not meet the needs of the bluebonnet flowers, but it certainly did well for the coreopsis and fire wheel.
Fire ant mounds can be treated to destroy the ant populations in the garden, or bait can be applied over a wider area to control the ants. There are organic treatments with Spinosad that are labeled for applications in the vegetable garden.See MoreFirewheel, larkspur, and coreopsis are major components of most Texas area wildflower seed mixes. Blue curl , however, is more difficult to find.
