I WAS in high school when Peque Gallaga started filming Oro Plata Mata in Bacolod and Silay. I am not sure what year this was but it was probably anytime between 1978 and 1980. At that time, every mestizo and mestiza in Bacolod wanted to audition for the role.

That’s a bit of an exaggeration but Oro, Plata, Mata was a big deal to all of us. Joel Torre was in the movie and he was the heartthrob of my generation. He was in high school at La Salle Bacolod when I was in elementary in St. Scholastica’s and everyone had a crush on him.

Anyway, when Oro, Plata, Mata was finally released in 1982, I didn’t get to watch it because I was graduating from high school then and I had other concerns in life. I am talking about Oro, Plata, Mata because if you’re flying via Philippine Airlines, you can watch it on the national flag carrier’s inflight entertainment under the Filipino Flicks catalogue.

Filipino passengers on PAL can now watch their favorites or people like me can catch up on films like Oro, Plata, Mata. Filipino Flicks also gives foreign passengers a glimpse of our culture. Aside from Oro, Plata, Mata, another Filipino cinematic masterpiece on Filipino Flicks is the iconic Nora Aunor starrer Himala. The 1982 movie tells the story of Elsa , a barrio lass whose claims that she has visions of the Virgin Mary change her life and turn her into a celebrity. The isolated village where she lives also suddenly turns into a tourists’ destination and it changes the lives of people, not necessarily for good.
