With the opening games of the 2023 FIBA World Cup kicking off this Friday, August 25, legendary Filipino basketball luminaries shared their inspiring anecdotes recently as they try to inspire the present Philippine team to soar to greater heights.
Ramon Fernandez, Francis Arnaiz and William 'Bogs' Adornado, undoubtedly, three of the most recognizable figures in Philippine basketball history, recalled how they were able to overcome great odds nearly 50 years ago, when they represented the country in the 1974 World Basketball Championships, the forerunner of the FIBA World Cup, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
On the other hand, Adornado, one of the greatest shooters the country has ever seen, said beating Australia was a proud moment for the national team considering they defeated a foreign squad that finished among the top 10 teams in the world during their time.'Yes, Australia was also in the top 10 of the Olympics,' said the 72-year-old Adornado, who averaged 21 points in the Filipinos's two World Cup wins against Australia and Central African Republic.
