When 14 boys assembled at Spiller Field 50 summers ago for their first Little League all-star practice, they had no inkling they were about to embark on arguably the most stunning sports accomplishment in the city’s history.
The 1972 Pan Am Little League team's 50-year reunion included a trip to where their memorable summer all began. Their accomplishment is noted with a sign at Spiller Field in Strawberry Park.
None went on to do anything great like earn a college scholarship or play in the minor leagues, but in June, July and August of that year, the baseball gods made sure some Pasadena children could do no wrong. Days later, the city’s pint-size heroes were boarding an Eastern Airlines flight in the middle of the night for a trip to Florida.
“There were some games we could have easily lost. There was a lot of pressure but we didn’t know it,” outfielder/third baseman Scott Sewell said. “My one memory is I made an error that led to their first run. I’ve never gotten that out of my head,” Folk said.
