Harlandale and South San Antonio ISD families say goodbye to elementary schools that have taught their kids for generations.
Alexander Cantu rushes to hug his dad, Daniel Cantu, while his sister, Alizabeth laughs and watches. After the kids won awards at Carroll Bell Elementary, the family went to Chuck E. Cheese for pizza and a few quick games. The day was bittersweet for the Cantu family, which has attended the soon-to-be closed neighborhood school for generations.Confetti floated above smiling faces. Children waved to cheering parents.
It’s the same next door, at another small school district south of downtown, Harlandale ISD, which has adopted a detailed plan to “repurpose” four campuses starting this fall. Both serve high percentages of English language learners. Both have lost families to charter schools and the lure of new housing developments along San Antonio’s outer edges, where school districts face the opposite problem: keeping up with growth.
Harlandale ISD, a “B” rated district, will close Columbia Heights, Morrill, Rayburn and Carroll Bell elementary schools, which earned mostly Bs and one C at the campus level.Officials at other inner-city, high-poverty school districts with shrinking enrollments have warned that it could happen to them, too.
Carroll Bell, a “B” rated school, opened in 1922 as the San Jose Ward School and was renamed in 1953. Harlandale ISD spent about $17 million to build a new school to replace it in 2018, and a similar amount to replace Vestal Elementary, under a 2015 bond program. Teachers will have to pay close attention to the uprooted students and their social-emotional health and socialization — and the students will need to learn that, in life, “things change all the time,” Tamez said.
“My heart was obliterated,” Alexander said of the night the board voted to close the schools. Alizabeth, a third-grader, said she was mostly confused about why a good school was being shut down.
