A Hinsdale doctor and his Lombard-based surgical center have been ordered to pay more than $750,000 to the United States to settle a lawsuit accusing them of submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and a federal employee health program.
A Hinsdale doctor and his Lombard-based surgical center have been ordered to pay more than $750,000 to the United States to settle a lawsuit accusing them of submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and a federal employee health program, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Friday.
According to federal prosecutors, Greager created fraudulent claims at the Lombard facility between 2015-2021 by stating that mole-removal procedures had been provided to patients on multiple dates.Prosecutors said that Greager had removed multiple moles on a single date, but the procedures were billed as if they were removed on separate dates to maximize reimbursement from Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
“Greager’s conduct delayed critical testing on moles that he removed for serious illnesses, including cancer. Greager also created fake patient charts, including preoperative and postoperative notes that indicated he performed mole-removal procedures on dates when he was not in Illinois,” the June release about his sentencing said.
This practice caused Medicare and the FEHP to pay more than they would have if the mole removals had been billed as having occurred at the same visit.
