With just a month left until the fall semester begins, Chambers County has gained court approval to immediately close three schools and combine two of them into a magnet program.
The STEAM Academy will temporarily be housed at majority-Black Eastside Elementary, which will merge with majority-Black J.P. Powell Middle School and Five Points Elementary, which is about 60% white and located on the northern side of the county. All students at those schools will automatically be enrolled in the magnet program, and other students will be able to enroll if space allows.
Many residents who spoke were not opposed to consolidation, but feared the plan would lead to further disinvestment in the community, which will now be home to a magnet academy, but also will lose a middle school building – and potentially a high school building – in the process. In his 12-page order, Watkins noted several concerns were raised with the plan, ranging from bullying, to driving times for school pickups, to the loss of close-knit communities. But the objections, he said, weren’t enough to prove that the district was acting in an unconstitutional manner.
He did note, however, that while the Board does not need further approval to close and consolidate the schools, it must provide the public a full opportunity to comment on how and when the consolidation will occur.
