Relatives of Malik Faisal Akram, 44, said he had “mental health issues.” Authorities say he left Lancashire, England, in recent days or weeks and acquired a gun at some point shortly after arriving in North Texas.
All four hostages, including Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, escaped unharmed Saturday after the daylong standoff between Akram and authorities. Gulbar Akram added that, “We would like to say that we as a family do not condone any of his actions and would like to sincerely apologize wholeheartedly to all the victims involved in the unfortunate incident.”
He added that FBI officials were expected to arrive in England on Sunday as part of their investigation into the case, and he asked people to respect the family’s privacy during their grieving, particularly since another sibling died about three months earlier. “In Blackburn, we firmly stand by the belief that no community should live in fear for its safety as they go about practicing their religious beliefs or identity,” the statement said. “We stand in solidarity in condemning this act of hate, violence and terror.”
Biden said he doesn’t know the motive or why the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue was targeted. “This was an act of terror,” he said. Although officials did not release a motive for the incident, Akram could be heard demanding the release of Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani woman who is serving a lengthy federal sentence for shooting at two U.S. military officers.
His post claimed that Siddiqui had been “illegally and unjustly treated by the [tyrant] regimes of Pakistan and America, suffering continuing torture, abuse and inhumane treatment.” And Choudary called on Muslims to participate in the campaign, writing that Islamic history is rich with examples of Muslim armies being sent to free prisoners “held by non-Islamic regimes.”
The lawyer, Marwa Elbially, said by phone on Sunday that her client is no longer being housed in isolation at the Fort Worth prison and that Siddiqui has not reported any other incidents of mistreatment. The Justice Department released data in the fall showing that Jews as the most targeted religious group in America.
