Matt Borges described Dave Yost as “sympathetic” but said Yost also “wanted to go back and look at the law.”
CINCINNATI — During testimony in federal court on Friday, an FBI agent described Matt Borges’s efforts to help foil an expected campaign to repeal House Bill 6 by trying to convince his friend, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, to interpret the bill’s nuclear bailout provision as a tax.
However, Borges also relayed that during a dinner meeting, Yost described HB6 as “bad policy” and said: “I would be out front opposing this if it wasn’t for FirstEnergy’s support and your involvement.” Along with the texts, prosecutors identified two phone calls between Yost and Householder in the time period – calls Wetzel said Householder deleted from his phone.
Weztel’s Friday testimony describing Borges’ lobbying efforts gives a clearer look at why FirstEnergy Solutions hired Borges in the first place despite personal tension between him and Householder. Borges, an ex-Ohio Republican Party chairman, was a close political adviser to Yost at the time.
