My family is trying to move to Canada to escape the anti-trans laws spreading in the US
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a 49-year-old mother in Oregon. Her teenage son is transgender, and because of the rise ofin the United States, her family is planning to move to Canada in the next year and a half. Insider agreed to withhold her identity for her safety, but it's known to Insider. This conversation has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.
I think he thinks a handshake over a hug is an acknowledgment of manliness. But he also uses my son's chosen names and his pronouns. And that's what kids need: the basic recognition of their human dignity. Even though anti-trans laws are ramping up in states like Tennessee and Florida, things are relatively stable where we are in Oregon — for now. But I don't want to stay here and wait for the day when things aren't so stable. I especially don't want to see the outcome of the next presidential election, in which at least one likely Republican candidate is targeting healthcare for trans people like my son.
Even then, successful immigration isn't such a sure thing. Both my husband and my son have autism, and although Canada has loosened its restrictions for families of autistic children seeking to immigrate, the guidelines for adults are less permissive. My husband and son wouldn't be"out" about having autism when immigrating or applying for jobs.
