“He has not been in digital contact with friends or family since Tuesday morning Australian time, which is unusual for him,” the spokeswoman, Lesley Parker, said. “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance ... to the family of an Australian man who has been reported as being detained in North Korea,” a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.North Korea’s mission to the United Nations did not respond immediately to a request for comment. The treatment of foreign citizens, most usually from the United States, by the secretive North has been a contentious issue over the years.

The United States imposed a ban on its citizens traveling to North Korea in September 2017, with a few exceptions for humanitarian workers or journalists. “Our embassy in South Korea has reached out to relevant officials in North Korea,” Cormann told Bloomberg Television.
