Family members of Malachi Williams, who was shot and killed by a San Marcos police officer, gathered to honor him at a vigil Thursday.
SAN MARCOS — The last time Wayne Miller saw his grandson, Malachi Williams was sitting on a bench outside the San Marcos Public Library. He had a big smile on his face, and as Miller walked into the library, Williams ran past him and jumped up to tap the top of the door frame. On Thursday night, Miller and his family stood outside the library with a crowd of supporters, sharing stories about Williams and asking for answers about the shooting that led to his death.
Police say video shows slain suspect running at bystanders with knife Williams' family and Mano Amiga, a San Marcos social justice group, organized a vigil to honor him and call for transparency and for release of the video footage. The vigil began at San Marcos City Hall before moving to the library, where Williams spent much of his time. Police said Williams was homeless, but his older sister, Kay Miller, said she wanted people to know more about her brother than just that.
