Fairbanks Arbor Day Committee rescued several birches that were growing on top the Polaris Building which is scheduled for destruction.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On May 20, the Fairbanks community will gather in celebration of the globally known holiday, Arbor Day .

According to Ritchie Musick, a founding member of the Fairbanks Arbor Day Committee, Arbor Day in Alaska is held on the third Monday in May. Enacted by the state legislature in 1973, since its inception, the committee has planted trees all over town, including in parks and at public buildings. In fact, “Two weeks ago members of the Fairbanks Arbor Day Committee rescued several birches that were growing on top the Polaris Building which is scheduled for destruction” Musick said.

“These trees have self-implanted there and over the past few years have struggled to take hold on the sunny roof. One of these will be planted in front of City Hall as a memento from the days when the Polaris Building was a major destination in Fairbanks. At one time it housed a Black Angus Steakhouse, the Petroleum Club, and finally the Tiki Cove Restaurant” Musick added.

This year, the Arbor Day celebration will be held at City Hall at 12 p.m. on Monday, May 20. The ceremonial planting will begin with a recognition of the history and importance of the holiday. There will also be a reading of the official Proclamation of the day by the mayor, and finally the planting of the tree by the mayor with the assistance of school children.
