Jackie Galloway of the United States looks at her bronze medal during the medals ceremony after beating Gwladys Epangue of France at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.McKINNEY — The consequences for the drug test that North Texas Olympic bronze medalist Jaqueline Galloway failed in 2019 could reverberate for the rest of her life — including a loss of at least $270,000 in earning potential, an economist testified Tuesday in a Collin County courtroom.
After being subjected to a random drug test about a week later, Galloway learned she tested positive for ibutamoren, a growth hormone banned by the USADA. Galloway is accusing H-E-B and Nexgen Pharma, the company that made the supplements, of deceptive trade practices and advertising.
But on Tuesday, Nexgen lawyer Russell Schell questioned whether Galloway was exaggerating the impact the USADA notice could have on her career. Galloway testified that nobody has told her they would refuse to write a letter of recommendation, or that she would be ineligible to receive a certification because of her suspension.
While he used some publicly available data to get to that figure, Matheson conceded that the calculation involved assumptions about the thinking of the people who would be in charge of hiring Galloway.Matheson explained outside the presence of the jury that he ran a different model under the scenario that Galloway would have competed in another Olympics and become a sought-after taekwondo instructor. Had that happened, she could have potentially earned between $1.7 million and $2.
