The Utah DrepartmentCertainly. Based on the information provided in the press release, here's a breakdown of how the new avalanche mitigation process will work
The Utah Department of Transportation is doing away with its use of military artillery as a means of controlling avalanches in Little Cottonwood Canyon - and the work on the system infrastructure is beginning almost immediately.
Beginning on July 8, UDOT will begin installing 16 Wyssen Avalanche Towers along the Mount Superior ridgeline aboves Little Cottonwood Canyon Road ."Previously, avalanche and road crews used howitzers to trigger approximately 330 controlled avalanches each season," according to a UDOT statement issued Monday. "But with the Wyssen Avalanche Towers, crews will be able to trigger avalanches from a safe location and greater efficiency.
“This project is part of UDOT’s long-term plan to reduce the amount of military artillery fired in the canyon,” UDOT Avalanche Safety Program Manager Steven Clark said in the statement.
The Mount Superior Recreation Area, including its trails and climbing areas, will be closed until the project is complete. Work will be happening seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, weather permitting, and will include removing loose rock and soil before heavy pieces of equipment are carried into the canyon by helicopter.
