Earlier in the day, I finished a three-hour tour where my guide effortlessly navigated me through the labyrinth of coral walls of Stone Town in Zanzibar as he pointed out significant architecture and locations of theAnd now, for the last two hours, I tried to retrace our steps to find a restaurant he had casually pointed out.
In January, I turned 50 and wanted to hit a bucket-list place to mark and perhaps forget the milestone. I always like to vacation on my birthday, as it falls after holiday travelers are home. January is a perfect time to find deals on flights and hotels. My criteria for this trip included a beach, historical significance and being outside the usual Western tourist locations.
Getting halfway around the world takes time and planning. My initial online search for flights to Zanzibar found nothing that worked with my schedule and budget. Thankfully, friends of mine in Dubai informed me about Fly Dubai, a subsidiary airline of Emirates that is easier to find directly on the company's website versus a general online search. I found a direct flight from Dubai to Zanzibar, avoiding transferring at Dar El Salam’s airport or taking a ferry.
What hooked me on the Paje by Night was a review that said 80 percent of the people who stayed at the hotel were solo travelers. When I arrived, the percentage was closer to 90 percent, and all the solo travelers were female. Most travelers were escaping the frigid and dark winter in Northern Europe and wanting to stay close to the same time zone as their homebound families.
