cleanly realizes the cinematic quality of the novel, preserving the text’s claustrophobic tension and thematic resonance. But it’s enlivened by great acting. Mescal and Ronan portray Junior and Henrietta, a married couple living in a rural farmhouse 40 or so years into the future. The vast majority of the film takes place in their home and stays with them through an unpredictable, tragic journey, sprinkled with glimmers of hope and punctuated by a reveal that ought to compel a rewatch.
This all sounds cryptic by design. When Reid first wrote the novel, he was primarily interested in exploring a long-term couple—“that particular kind of relationship that felt somehow confining, that wasn’t affected by one dramatic event—the way we often see in novels and in films—but by something that was happening over time.” He didn’t outline, didn’t keep an ending in mind. Henrietta and Junior just started talking. Then Reid started thinking about space and science.
“There’s something that a lot of people can relate to in their own relationships, in their lives,” Davis says. “Each actor, as people, brought their own interpretation of that to the performances. There was a lot of pressure, and a lot of fuel.”Reid’s conception of Junior and Henrietta was rooted in a sort of old-school Americana, a young couple adhering to traditional gender roles even well into the future, and without any real sense of society around them. That isolation is palpable onscreen.
If only that Canadian house could just move to that spot of land, they’d have their set. Instead, they built it from scratch in Wangaratta. Oscar-winning production designer traveled to Canada, studied the house, and brought the specs to Australia to essentially recreate it, minus a few modifications that’d improve its function for the story, like the placement of a particular tree.
