Westlake High expects 20-25 players on its roster for the first season, and the City Section will have enough teams to hold playoffs and hand out championships.
Elena Johnson played tackle football starting at 7 years old, and had two older brothers that were in the sport. She played for about five years before her parents put an end to it because she was much smaller than the boys tackling her.Now a senior at Westlake High School, Johnson is reviving her football career in the form of girls flag football.
The sport has caught on at a national level, as well. Data collected by the Sports Business Journal shows that 474,000 girls between ages 6 and 17 played flag football in 2022, and 15,716 girls played varsity high school flag football from 2021-2022. “It’s just so cool where the game of flag football is going,” Alexander said. “And the NFL is behind it 110% so it can only go up. The Pro Bowl’s now flag football. They do the halftime show and the flag football teams come in. The girls come out. So it’s just growing and growing.”
There are no-run zones five yards from each end zone to avoid short-yardage running situations and the contact that comes with them. Johnson, who also runs track, and Aghassi and Katie Beaven, who come from soccer backgrounds, embrace the speed and finesse of the game. The field size is flexible. It can be a minimum of 30 yards wide and 40 yards maximum. For length, it must be at least 50 yards long and at most 80 yards with two end zones of 10 yards apiece. These regulations make the sport more accessible, according to City Section Sports Information Director Dick Dornan.
It’s up to individual leagues to determine game scheduling in both sections and CIF-SS teams could opt to hold tournaments in lieu of sectional championships.
