Colin Powell, the influential former four-star general and U.S. secretary of state, has died from Covid-19 complications at age 84, his family announced Monday. READ MORE:

Powell made history as the U.S.’s first Black secretary of state and also served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His family remembered him in their statement as a “remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.”Powell was a top military officer who toured twice in Vietnam with the U.S. Army before joining public life. He went on to play an influential role in several Republican administrations, starting with that of former President Ronald Reagan, for whom he was a national security advisor. Powell was then tapped to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George H. W.
