Former Peekskill Police Officer Michael Agovino is going to prison for sexually abusing a woman he claimed to be investigating for a crime she didn't commit.
An ex-police officer in Westchester County who admitted to sexually abusing, stalking, and coercing a woman while he was on duty is going to prison for less than half the amount of time that prosecutors asked for. Police Officer Michael Agovino to seven years in state prison and 15 years of supervision after he is released. Agovino is also required to register as a sex offender.
"Michael Agovino egregiously violated the trust of the Peekskill community, grossly abused his position of authority as a police officer, and violated his oath of office," District Attorney Miriam Rocah said in a statement. "While we are disappointed that the Court's sentence did not meet our recommendation, Michael Agovino is going to prison. We hope this case sends a message that no one is above the Law.
The mayor at the time called the case "an embarrassment to our police department and our entire city.Agovino, 36, of Orangetown, pleaded guilty in March 2022 to numerous felonies, including sexual abuse, stalking, burglary, falsifying business records, and more.
