The Sandiganbayan has sentenced former Leyte representative Eduardo Veloso to up to 56 years' imprisonment in connection with his transfer of P24.2 million from his Priority Development Assistance Fund to a non-government organization in 2007.
Meanwhile, TRC officials Dennis Cunanan, Francisco Figura, and Marivic Jover were acquitted for the failure of the prosecution to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Further, it said that it was proven that Veloso gave unwarranted benefits and advantage when he selected AARON to be its NGO partner.
“Verily, in selection AARON to the exclusion of other NGOs to act as partner of TRLC absent any adequate justification, the accused gave Ronquillo and AARON unwarranted benefits and advantage,” it said. “In sum, the actions of accused Veloso all point to the conclusion that it is with evident bad faith and manifest partiality to AARON that he endorsed the same, in violation of existing laws and regulations,” it said.
