It is not yet clear who evaluated Epstein and determined he was out of danger, or who else at the MCC had a role in the decision. Typically, the suicide watch designation is determined by a facility’s chief psychiatrist.
Bernard Kerik, the former commissioner of both New York City’s Department of Correction and police department, speculated on Saturday that Epstein’s solitary confinement may have been deliberate, calling it a “mechanism to demean, degrade and demoralize a prisoner.” If that’s true, that kind of work environment may have contributed to all the failures which seem to have made Epstein’s death possible.
