But neither is it in the echelon of some of the other deals the Padres have given to their star players recently en route to amassing MLB’s third-highest payroll in 2023 and committing $608 million to just seven players over the next five years.
Said Preller: “I think Jake is one of the best players in the league. He’s a guy for us that there’s just a lot of belief and faith in. With any player when you give somebody an extension, you commit to one of your players for a number of years, you’re really betting on the person.
