Avery Brooks was one the greatest actors to play one of the greatest Star Trek captains, but he was much more, as proved by his non-Sisko DS9 roles.
As well as playing Captain Benjamin Sisko, Avery Brooks played several other characters across Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's seven seasons. It's appropriate that Brooks took on multiple roles during his time on DS9 as Sisko himself had to simultaneously occupy the roles of Starfleet Captain, Bajoran Emissary, and devoted father to Jake Sisko .
Sisko had an interest in baseball, creole food, and social history - interests that felt less elitist than the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew's love of classical music, Shakespeare, and jazz. Brooks' performance as Sisko delivered Star Trek one of its most nuanced lead characters of all time. It's therefore no surprise that fans are still keen to see Sisko return in modern Star Trek.
3 Gabriel Bell In another example of Avery Brooks giving a multi-layered performance, the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 2-parter "Past Tense" sees Sisko masquerade as important historical figure Gabriel Bell. Star Trek's Bell Riots were a pivotal event in the lead-up to the founding of the Federation. When Sisko, Dr. Bashir and Dax were stranded in the early 21st century, they had to ensure that the Bell Riots happened as they did in the history books.
