Avengers team up to defeat Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron
After the success of The Avengers and Phase One as a whole, Marvel Studios had a high bar to surpass when developing and executing their next phase of films. Not only did they have to continue solo franchises that were highly praised in the first phase, but they also had to follow up their biggest film of all time and bring in new characters with their own solo projects while they were at it. Tackling Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was not going to be an easy feat.
6 'Thor: The Dark World' Directed by Alan Taylor So much went awry with the production and eventual release of Thor's second film, Thor: The Dark World. Although Rotten Tomatoes would agree to disagree, it's widely considered one of the worst Marvel Studios films of all time among the fanbase.
Iron Man 3 also finds itself featuring an underrated villain. People initially thought Trevor Slattery was a terrible villain because he didn't end up being the version of the Mandarin that people wanted, but in hindsight, with the context of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it's easier to look back on him. He served as the first super-powered villain Stark had to go up against solo and this helps set it apart from the past two films in the franchise.
Of the franchise, this film does the best at using the character's size to its advantage in the action sequences. Whether it be Yellowjacket getting hit by Thomas the Tank Engine or Scott Lang flying through the sky on the back of an ant army, the hero's powers were utilized perfectly in his debut Marvel Cinematic Universe production.
