Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy have made a number of movies together, all of them hits with both critics and audiences, though only one of them ranks as the best. While Murphy served in supporting roles for Nolan in their first five collaborations, he will take the lead in Oppenheimer, their sixth movie together as actor and director. Cast in the title role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy plays the father of the atomic bomb in Nolan’s biographical drama set during World War II.
Murphy’s career has generally been met with acclaim. His breakout performance in 28 Days Later was followed by a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Breakfast on Pluto. He later starred in the British crime drama Peaky Blinders for six seasons, earning him many honors including a BAFTA TV Awards nod. He also co-starred in the Nolan-produced Transcendence, helmed by the filmmaker's longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

He had previously made a pair of psychological thrillers and a third film depicting a character's descent into a criminal underworld, and when he took on the reins of the Batman franchise with this movie, he applied what he knew to the iconic DC superhero. Nolan’s direction for The Dark Knight Trilogy is laid out well here, though it really took off later with its follow-up.
