Monje also stresses that more severe Covid-19 can result in significant and sometimes irreversible brain damage via a number of additional routes which the study did not look at, such as stroke. The study also cannot predict what might happen in the future as a result of Covid-19 infection.
The new study is not the only one to have focused on the neurological side effects of the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus, with alisting an alarming collection of neurological symptoms associated with long Covid. But, is it normal for respiratory viruses to cause these cognitive problems? And are we just noticing it with Covid-19 due to the sheer number of people infected over a short timescale?
