Considering that the Philippines had already been warned twice of its possible withdrawal from the GSP+ following the cases of extrajudicial killings under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Hannah Neumann, vice president of the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights, said the next two years would be crucial for the country to retain its GSP+ status, which is set to expire in December 2022.
Aside from meeting lawmakers, human rights advocates and government officials, the delegation also visited detained former senator Leila de Lima, who they said was a victim of political prosecution.
