A Euclid police officer who beat a Black motorist during a 2017 traffic stop has been spared jail time. Michael Amiott was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $1,000 in court costs for the assault in Euclid Municipal Court Friday morning.
A Euclid Municipal Court jury found Amiott guilty in July of misdemeanor charges of assault and interfering with the civil rights of Richard Hubbard III during an Aug. 12, 2017 traffic stop that was captured on cellphone video and viewed millions of times online.Reece cited the longevity of the case, which started nearly seven years ago, as a factor in determining the sentence he handed down.
Hubbard told Reece in Friday’s hearing that he wanted Amiott to receive the maximum sentence of six months in jail. Amiott went on to say that he has been working towards rehabilitation and changing training for law enforcement. “I’m still troubled by the fact that you did not address Mr. Hubbard,” Reece said again after he imposed his sentence.Reece then spoke to Hubbard.
Amiott kneed Hubbard, tackled him to the ground and punched him in the face and body several times. Hubbard was handcuffed and taken to a police cruiser.
