Both Padres minor leaguers statistically struggling but remain among game’s top prospects
Ethan Salas laughs before drills during the first day of Padres spring training workouts at the Peoria Sports Complex on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024 in Peoria, AZ. They, however, remain among the top prospects in the game and as such will represent the Padres in the All-Star Futures Game, Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday.
Like the All-Star Game, each MLB team is represented on All-Star Futures Game rosters, which are selected collaboratively by Major League Baseball, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and the 30 organizations. A knee injury ended that season and Salas has started this year at high Single-A Fort Wayne, where he is hitting .191/.299/.267 with one homer in 64 games in a stint meant to challenge the Padres’ top prospect.
“The catching part has been a big positive in terms of the ability to handle the staff and catch the baseball,” Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller said. “Throwing is a real weapon. He’s throwing guys out. He’s got a plus arm and he’s utilizing it. And the quality of the at-bats are good. He’s not having the results from an average standpoint that he wants but his ABs, he’s not overmatched in any way, and he’s having quality at bats.
