On March 24th, ESSENCE Magazine hosted their 15th annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon at the Beverley Hills Wilshire Hotel, coming off the heels of a tumultuous pandemic and virtual ceremony in 2021.
Robin Thede and Courtney Kemp echoed a similar point of view. Courtney Kemp, former writer, and showrunner for Starz, brought up the constant scrutiny and doubt amongst white executives in Hollywood. She said emphatically, “Great question; I was saying as we're watching with the supreme court hearings, we are doubted. We are constantly undermined. It’s always so difficult for us to arrive and achieve and be appreciated for that arrival and those achievements. Today is about the opposite.
“What's missing in are modern, normalized representations of Black women and what we can be and the diversity amongst black women. We're not a monolith. Whether it's internet, TV, film, editorial, those things represent us, such as our sizes, shapes, color ranges, hair textures, those things matter. Black women have got to embrace us in all that beauty and force the world, too, as well.
Newcomer Quinta Brunson is experiencing a meteoric rise in Hollywood with her wildly successful ABC sitcombut also shared the importance of Black women being heard in Hollywood. When asked how the entertainment industry can help black women succeed in entertainment and behind the scenes? She responded, “Hear us.
During the luncheon, honoree Aunjanue Ellis gave an emotional and harrowing speech, reflecting the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s research and describing her 27-year career trajectory in Hollywood of being immersed in darkness."I did it in the dark," Ellis said, reflecting on her career."This moment of shine, of luminosity, y'all, is going to pass.
