The Biden administration is set to issue a final decision Tuesday to stop the controversial proposed Pebble mine in Southwest Alaska, saying it will cause “unacceptable, adverse” harm to the valuable Bristol Bay salmon fishery.

The Biden administration was set to issue a decision halting the proposed Pebble mine, saying it will cause “unacceptable, adverse” harm to the Bristol Bay salmon fishery.

Fishermen, tribes and other opponents of the mine are hoping the decision spells the project’s demise. But the copper and gold prospect’s developer and the state of Alaska have previously threatened legal action to reverse it. Speaking to reporters Monday, EPA administrator Michael Regan called Bristol Bay a “one-of-a-kind ecosystem.”

She called the EPA action “historic progress” toward the goal of safeguarding the Bristol Bay watershed.
