If Lucasfilm was to ever reexamine their use of deepfake technology over recasting, it's going to be with the upcoming Mandalorian movie.
If Lucasfilm were to ever reconsider its use of "deepfake" technology to bring back Star Wars characters from the original trilogy, the time is now with the upcoming Mandalorian movie on the horizon. Rumored to serve as a canonical and reworked adaptation of Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire novel, it stands to reason that the heroes of the Galactic Civil War will make appearances in the New Republic set movie.
However, Star Wars saw a return to deepfaking with a flashback to Leia's Jedi training in 2019's The Rise of Skywalker and more prominently in The Mandalorian season 2 finale with Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, both of whom were made to look younger using stand-ins and CGI. "Deepfake Luke" also had a bigger role in The Book of Boba Fett, training the child Grogu in the ways of the Force.
Donald Glover's performance playing a younger version of Billy Dee William's Lando is impeccable, more than warranting the Lando series that's still in development which will hopefully get made sooner rather than later. Likewise, Alden Ehrenreich had a strong portrayal as Han Solo as well, bearing a solid resemblance to a younger Harrison Ford. However, much of his performance was bizarrely kept out of the film's marketing.
