Energy Harbor is moving up its plans to shut down or sell its remaining units at one of the last coal-fired power plants left in Ohio.

The owner of one of the state's few remaining coal-fired power plants plans to shut down or sell its remaining units at the plant five years earlier earlier than itAkron-based Energy Harbor, a former FirstEnergy subsidiary, said Monday that it will sell or deactivate the remaining three units at the W.H. Sammis plant near Stratton in eastern Ohio along the Ohio River in June 2023. Previously, it said it would act by 2028.

With the moves, Energy Harbor's remaining power generation will come from the Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear power plants in Ohio and the Beaver Valley nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Energy Harbor's decision on the Sammis plant is the latest on what has been a back and forth on whether the plant will stay open.

With a closing date set for Sammis, there are only three big coal-fired plants left in the state — Cardinal in Jefferson County, James M. Gavin in Gallia County and the Kyger Creek in Gallia County — that have yet to announce plans to fully close.
