The industry knows menthol cigarretes are more addictive and exploits this fact to increase its profits at the expense of Black health and wealth, writes Kyev Tatum.By the time my mother died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, she hadn’t touched a cigarette in 15 years. It was already too late: The damage from decades of smoking menthol cigarettes had been done.
Watching the person I loved more than life itself slowly deteriorate before my eyes absolutely wrecked me. I spent the last two years of her life as a caretaker, watching over her as she struggled to breathe. As a pastor, I am no stranger to witnessing death, but hers, at the age of 64, was the most devastating I’d ever experienced, and there was only one entity to blame: Big Tobacco.
Carol Ann Tatum was a remarkable woman: intelligent, classy and caring. As a single mother, she poured everything she had into her seven kids. A minister herself, she knew I also had a calling — long before I was willing to acknowledge it myself. The tobacco industry made her life harder and took her from us far too soon.
The FDA has a duty to step in and stop the spiral of harm spawned by the tobacco industry’s deadly marketing tactics. Prohibiting menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars will quickly drive down tobacco use, reduce deeply rooted racial health disparities, safeguard the next generation from addiction, and ultimately save hundreds of thousands of lives.
