A fire caught on surveillance camera footage at a department store earlier this week is under investigation as an apparent arson, authorities said.
In a brief statement Wednesday, police said officers responded to Target, 1555 40th St., around 5:48 p.m. after dispatchers received calls about a fire inside the store.
Police said officers and Alameda County Fire Department firefighters arrived at the store to find store employees had evacuated all shoppers and that the fire had been extinguished. Investigators later found the fire began near a towel display, and saw a “potential person of interest” near the display after reviewing surveillance video camera footage. Police said they were not yet publicly sharing any information about the suspect.listing the store’s hours showed it as closed for business Wednesday and reopening to customers at 8 a.m. Thursday.
