What does it mean to grow—to become—while sitting comfortably on the cusp of discovery? Rohan Ayinde, “Outmoded Shapes” curator and Blanc gallery director, describes this exhibition as a virtual conversation between artists Ricki Dwyer, John Alleyne, and Zachary Nicol, and their selected anchor texts by Audre Lorde, Gordon Hall, bell hooks, and Mlondolozi Zondi.
Presented by Blanc and ACRE Projects, in “Outmoded Shapes,” Ayinde curates a space that in many ways inverts the body in order to arrive at a new, generative awareness of it. The process of becoming, returning, coming out, and inhabiting are evident in the presentation of each work. Visitors are grounded by quotes affixed to the gallery walls from the guiding texts referenced above, incorporating themes of healing, freedom, and intuitive knowing.
Two screens are positioned in the leftmost corner of the white space—directly across from this quote that allowed me to think of the gallery as a space for discovery. One sits on a low pedestal and the other is on the wall. The screen close to the floor shows hues of purple, green, blue, and peach with sounds that remind me of shifting through and reminiscing about old camera footage. The other featured a looped video installation of a performance piece by Zachary Nicol.
