The auction house is also holding its first selling exhibition with contemporary works by U.S. artists of Latin American and Caribbean descent
The spotlight will be on Latin America at Christie’s later this month as it holds a live auction dedicated to art from throughout the region in addition to an online sale and its first selling exhibition centered on contemporary works created by U.S. artists of Latin American or Caribbean descent.
“He was an artist emblematic of Latin American art,” says Marysol Nieves, a senior specialist in Christie’s department of Latin American art, who described the sadness the auction house’s specialists felt after hearing the news just after the sales were announced. A large, elegantly dressed woman in a printed dress fills the frame in front of a packed bullring, her hair permed, her nails painted red, and her pupils looking sharply to the left.
Christie’s has delivered sales focusing on art from Latin America from the Spanish colonial period to the present since the 1980s, giving it a window into changing tastes over time. Lately, collectors are drawn to Spanish surrealists, including Matta and the late Cuban artist Wifredo Lam. There are also two works by Lam, including an untitled oil from 1945 with an estimate between US$350,000 and US$450,000.
Spanish colonial art has been regaining popularity over the last two years for the first time since the ’80s and ’90s, as American collectors and U.S.-based museums seek to expand their holdings to reflect the art of that time period, Nieves says.
