An Elgin teen's Eagle Scout project ended up collecting more than 1,600 pound of donated items — enough to provide more than 1,400 meals for the FISH Food Pantry.

“I chose this project because I wanted to do something that would truly help a lot of people. This project will have a genuine impact on the widespread community, rather than just a select few,” he said. “Through September we’ve already assisted as many families — about 5,500 — as we did in all of 2021,” he said.
“We gave out around 600 bags to homes and one week later we returned to the same neighborhoods to collect donations that were left on people’s front porches as instructed,” Sulemanjee said. “In total, I had a group of around 15 people that helped me between two weekends.”Advertisement Sulemanjee said the project taught him a lot about leadership and how to adapt when changes need to be made.
Pottorff’s 16-year-old son, Josh, led an effort at Elgin’s Bluff City Cemetery to replace the worn and damaged headstones of those who served during the Civil War with new ones provided by the Veterans Administration.
